I am not surprised that your doctor is a bit unsure what to do now, as he has already prescribed most of the safer options [safer in terms of pharmaceuticals] that he can. His only other selections are a long-acting beta-2 agonist (LABA) or a cortocosteroid inhaler, both of which have worse side effects [and if I'm not mistaken the FDA has put out a warning about LABAs].

You can tell your doctor that you are willing to attempt these if you actually want to take the risk in order to keep operating and/or you can try the Buteyko breathing technique, which is natural and safe but should be employed in conjunction with the meds that you are already on. Understand about it at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buteyko_approach.

I wish you luck — I am also asthmatic and I know how annoying asthma attacks are when they quit you from doing the items you want to do.

Your dilemma is not just the inhaler, it is that few doctors comprehend asthma.

I use the Ventolin inhaler but, honestly, what has genuinely helped me is cutting out a lot of dairy in my diet. I drink AT LEAST 8 huge glasses of water per day and avoid all dairy: milk, cheese, and so on.

I will not say I in no way have dairy but after a month of cutting way back on dairy, I noticed I wasn’t needing my inhaler as usually.

Also, take a item with Guaifenesin in it like Mucinex. Guaifenesin is very good for men and women with asthma. I get stuff at the Dollar Store that has Guaifenesin in it and it truly assists me.

I’m not a doctor and asthma can be life-threatening so please take my suggestions with a grain of salt and do a little research on it:

One of the best bronchial-dilators is an herb called ephedra. Ephedra acts a bit like speed or caffeine int he body, hence the negative press. It has, however, saved thousands of lives and has been used for thousands of years as an essential remedy in Chinese medicine.

You can buy ephedra at little herb/healthfood stores sometimes. Ephedrine is the laboratory-isolated version, and the side effects of it can be harsher. This is often sold at truckstop gas stations, or in stay-awake formulas at the drugstore. I don’t think its a god idea to take regular doses of this stuff, but you might keep it on hand just in case you have an attack and do not have meds that work.

I suggest you look into allergy sources. I know doctors will test for basic allergies, but I’ve heard several people say they had major improvements when they stopped eating dairy and wheat (which is hard to do, let me tell you), or got out of a house with mold in the basement or air ducts, or stopped using sprays and cleaners with harsh ingredients. I’m sure its trial & error, so I would pick one batch and see how you do after a month, then move on to the next thing, and so on.

    Good luck!
